Wandsworth Council Green Plaque to Recognise Historical Significance of London’s First Purpose-Built Mosque

London, UK – The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK will join Wandsworth Council in commemorating The Fazl Mosque, London’s first purpose-built mosque, with the unveiling of the council’s Green Plaque on Tuesday, 24 March 2026.
Located on Gressenhall Road in Southfields, the Fazl Mosque holds a unique place in British history. Opened in 1926, it stands as a symbol of faith, resilience, and the longstanding contribution of Muslim communities to British society.
The Green Plaque ceremony will recognise the mosque’s historic significance as well as its continued role as a centre for worship, interfaith dialogue, and community service. Members of the local community and guests will gather to reflect on the mosque’s rich heritage and its enduring impact over the past 100 years
The event will be attended by the Mayor of Wandsworth, Councillor Jeremy Ambache, the Leader of Wandsworth Council, Councillor Simon Hogg, and other distinguished guests and community members.
Reflecting on this, Rafiq Hayat, National President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK, said:
“The Fazl Mosque is not only a place of worship but a symbol of peace, unity, and service to humanity. For a century, it has stood as a beacon of Islamic values rooted in compassion, justice, and community engagement. We are honoured to see its legacy recognised through Wandsworth’s Green Plaque and remain committed to building bridges and contributing positively to British society for generations to come.”
As London’s first mosque, the Fazl Mosque has played a pivotal role in fostering understanding and dialogue between communities. Over the decades, it has welcomed visitors from all backgrounds and continues to serve as a hub for educational, charitable, and interfaith initiatives.
The unveiling of the Green Plaque marks not only a historic milestone but also a renewed commitment to the mosque’s founding principles of peace, tolerance, and service to all.
