Huddersfield’s Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Marks 80 Years Since VE and VJ Day with a Call for Peace

Mosques to host prayers, community outreach honouring veterans, and send messages of unity across Huddersfield As the UK marks the 80th anniversaries of Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, signifying the end of the Second World War, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Huddersfield has joined the nation in solemn remembrance.

With reverence and reflection, the community is paying tribute to the sacrifices of millions from Britain, the Commonwealth, and beyond who defended peace, freedom, and justice in the face of immense global adversity. “This anniversary is a solemn and meaningful opportunity to honour those who gave so much in the pursuit of peace. As we remember their sacrifices, we pray for a future free from war and filled with compassion and unity. said Fatihul-Haq, External Affairs Secretary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association, Huddersfield.

“Our community proudly lives by the motto: Love for All, Hatred for None”.

Honouring the Past, Building the Future

To mark this historic occasion, the community is supporting the national remembrance through a series of thoughtful initiatives designed to promote peace and honour the wartime generation:

  • Prayers for peace were held during Friday Prayers on 9 May in mosques across Huddersfield, with special announcements reflecting on the importance of the anniversary.
  • Commemorative banners were displayed at Ahmadiyya mosques, expressing heartfelt gratitude to veterans and reaffirming the community’s commitment to peace and justice.
  • Community outreach efforts included visits to local veterans and elderly residents, during which members presented commemorative cards and small gifts, along with prayers for their health and wellbeing.

A Message of Peace Amid Modern Challenges

Commemorations such as VE Day serve as powerful reminders of the immense cost of conflict, and the ongoing need for peace, justice, and unity. In a time of renewed global tensions, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community believes the lessons of the past are more relevant than ever. Their call is rooted in timeless Islamic teachings found in the Holy Qur’an, which emphasise fairness, justice, and mutual support:

“O ye who believe! Be steadfast in the cause of Allah, bearing witness in equity; and let not a people’s enmity incite you to act otherwise than with justice. Be always just, that is nearer to righteousness.” (Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:9)

“And help one another in righteousness and piety…” (Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:3)

Standing United for a Peaceful Future

Guided by the principle of Love for All, Hatred for None, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Huddersfield continues its mission to foster respectful dialogue, community unity, and peaceful coexistence. “We encourage everyone, regardless of background or belief, to join in promoting peace through kindness and mutual understanding,” said Fatihul-Haq. “In a world facing renewed challenges, let us raise our voices in a dignified and constructive manner, without causing harm or division.”

As the community remembers the sacrifices of the past, it looks to the future with a shared commitment to ensure that peace endures for generations to come.
