Free family fun day in Morden in aid of Humanity First charity
Surbiton-based charity Humanity First are hosting a free family fun day in Morden this Sunday (June 9).
The event will take place in the park opposite the Baital Futuh Mosque, also known as the Morden Mosque, this Sunday.
According to the organisers, a car boot sale plus wealth of activities are on offer including Beat The Goalie, a bouncy castle, a rodeo bull and a smaller version of the TV’s Total Wipeout obstacle course.
While the fun day is free to enter, Humanity First are hoping to raise money for their humanitarian efforts via the food and drink stalls that will offer “delicious and reasonably priced food” for all the attendees.
The Surrey Comet spoke with Chris Edwards, a Trustee for Humanity First, about the group’s work.
He explained how the charity — which was inspired by Islam and is linked to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) — takes humanitarianism overseas and into communities in the UK alike.
“One of the pillars of Islam is charity and we aim to give charity to everyone, those of all faiths and none.
“We do lots of work in Africa including digging water wells, the Gift of Sight which provides eye operations, we’ve also built schools and have a hospital in Guatemala…wherever there is a need we are,” Mr Edwards said.
He added that much of the recent work Humanity First has done is linked to causes in the area.
“We do work locally in Kingston we work with Stay Well who look after older people and put on coach trips for older people…”
Last winter, Humanity First also helped provide dentistry for those in need of it who might not have been able to get treatment otherwise.
“I was driving the dental lorry over Christmas and we had some dentists in offering treatment. We’re trying to grow our work in the UK,” he said.
Humanity First, who boast “just two (paid) employees in the whole of the UK”, are run almost entirely by volunteers and say that almost all the money they raise at the fun day will go towards causes they sponsor rather than being dispersed amongst the organization itself.
The Family Fun Day is taking place in the park opposite the Morden Mosque between 12pm-7pm and has free entry.
