Fazl Mosque marks 100 years with service programme

A century of faith, service, and community is being celebrated by the Greenford Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

The group is marking 100 years since the opening of the Fazl Mosque in Southfields, the first purpose-built mosque in London.

Built in 1926, the mosque has long served as a centre for worship, interfaith dialogue, and community outreach.Dr Mansoor Javed, president of the Greenford branch, said: “Our community in Greenford and surrounding areas exists because of that mosque in London. From the Fazl Mosque, missionaries were sent out to towns and cities across Britain to build communities like ours, and everything we do here began there.

“A hundred years on, we mark this centenary the way we were taught to – by helping the people around us. That is what a mosque is for. It is a beacon of peace for all.”

The centenary is being marked under the theme Fazl Mosque: Beacon of Peace – A Century of Integration, Loyalty and Service. To mark the occasion, the community has launched a year-long programme to serve 10,000 meals for the homeless and needy and to dedicate 10,000 volunteer hours for people in need across Britain. A special advertising campaign will also see 100 London buses carry messages about the mosque and its legacy in October. The Fazl Mosque has welcomed numerous dignitaries over the years, including Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Sir Muhammad Zafrulla Khan, Nobel laureate Professor Abdus Salam, and members of the Saudi and British royal families.

In 2018, it was granted listed status by Historic England, and in March 2026 it received a green heritage plaque from Wandsworth Borough Council.

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the Fifth Caliph and Worldwide Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, said: “For one hundred years, the Fazl Mosque has stood as a place of worship, peace and service to humanity. Its history reflects the principle that true faith requires us to serve our neighbours, show loyalty to the country in which we live, and make peace with all people, regardless of their faith or background.”

The Fazl Mosque has also hosted events for the Queen’s jubilees and the Coronation of King Charles III.
