South London – Merton Friends of the Earth plant 250 trees
Environmental campaigners, a mosque and the local community came together to plant 250 trees in a south London park.The event took place in Morden Park on Saturday, March 21, as part of an ongoing project led by Merton Friends of the Earth to help increase the biodiversity of the open space.
This marks the fifth planting event since the initiative began in 2020.Gabriel Partos, joint co-ordinator of Merton Friends of the Earth, said: “We are a group of volunteers, relying on the help of local residents. We wish to thank all those who have given their time to help us plant over 1,900 trees in Morden Park in the past five years.”Mr Partos added: “We are grateful to the Woodland Trust, who have provided the trees – native varieties that encourage wildlife – all for free.”We would also like to express our thanks to Merton Council and their green spaces contractors, IdVerde, whose staff cut the grass and provide mulch before each planting.”
Six-year-old Miro Siska Primo, who took part, said: “I love planting trees.”
